The Definitive Fan #5 – The Fair Weather Fan

definitive fan

Welcome to The Definitive Fan – The online guide from PowerPlayGoal.com to the types of fans who you’re likely to meet (or not meet) at a hockey game.
Some of these fans clearly have a true passion for the game, others, well, they are just there for something to do.

Fan Type #5 – The Fair Weather Fan

This weather forecast predicts clear skies, and a winning streak for your favourite NHL team.

Bio:
Often confused with the Bandwagoner. As the name suggests, the Fair Weather Fan only comes out to support their team when the weather is fair, as in, when their team is playing well. They’ll attend plenty of home games during a time period in which the team is successful.

They’ll continue to go and watch games for as long as their team is constantly doing well: they’ll then buy merchandise, such as a jersey, talk about the team, and hockey in general, with their friends and fellow fans all while making themselves sound like they know everything about the game… but the very moment something bad happens, like the team ending their awesome winning streak with a supposedly “major” loss, they will suddenly feel slightly disappointed. Generally, sports fans do feel unhappy when their favourite team has just lost a game, especially the passionate fans of said team, but they never go as far as to lose interest altogether.

Usually, no matter what the team is going through or how bad they are doing, the more passionate hockey fans will still continue to attend and watch games to support their team. As for the Fair Weather Fans however, while the team continues to struggle during a losing streak, they’ll conveniently lose interest, because all of a sudden they now have supposedly better things to do, like watching America’s Got Talent or something. They won’t bother with hockey again until word of mouth tells them that the team is winning again, and that this fan has just missed the most epic win the team has ever had.

Characteristics:
No distinguishable characteristics, they seem to blend in.

Favourite Team:
SUNBELT TEEMZ OLOLOLOLOL. Seriously though, every team has its fair share of Fair Weather Fans.

Other:
As far as players go, they may only remember the names of the star players. Try talking to them about Pittsburgh for example, and the only names they’ll remember will most likely be Sidney Crosby, “Mall King”, and “that guy in goal… Flurry? Something like that”.

The Definitive Fan #4 – The Fights Fan

definitive fan

Welcome to The Definitive Fan – The online guide from PowerPlayGoal.com to the types of fans who you’re likely to meet (or not meet) at a game.
Some of these fans clearly have a true passion for the game, others, well, they are just there for something to do.

Fan Type #4 – The Fights Fan

Apparently, this is the only reason for some to attend a Hockey game…

Bio:
So there’s no WWE, UFC or Boxing on at the moment? Doesn’t matter for this type of fan who, much like many British Football/Soccer Fans, may instead decide to attend a Hockey game purely because they know that there are fights, and lots of violence, and… well, that’s the only reason.

While fighting does play a key part in the game of Hockey, the Fights Fan will attend a game under the strange assumption that Hockey is only about thuggish players getting angry all the time and pummelling the crap out each other, with this supposedly happening every five seconds. What they seem to forget is that the main objective of Hockey is for one team to score more goals than the other, not who can beat up the most players.

Sometimes they will sit through an entire game, always confused and/or not caring about the rules, and they may notice that not one fight has broken out. As a result, they may buy a beer, get drunk and harass other fans in attendance, winding them up enough to start a fight in the stands, or they will find a way to harass the players on the ice and get a piece of the action themselves. Otherwise, they will get bored quickly and leave the game early, only to miss a fight that takes place later on.

It’s because of the Fights Fan that there are some who believe Hockey seems to have a mainly “Caveman” appeal, while there are others who have been led to believe that Hockey is a horrid, barbaric sport. We’ll cover the latter of these people another time.

Characteristics:
Notably male – aged 15 up to their mid twenties. They won’t be wearing any team specific clothing, and they may have a certain generic, thuggish look to them.

Favourite Team:
Who cares? They only go to games to see the players beat each other up. They couldn’t give a rat’s arse about the team’s history and traditions, and for all they know, the team names are just “The Brawlers” and “The Bullies”.

Other:
“I went to a fight and a Hockey game broke out”… classic. That joke NEVER gets old.

The Definitive Fan: British Fans Part 3/3

Since this is a UK based website, we would like to welcome you to this three part special of The Definitive Fan – The online guide from PowerPlayGoal.com to British fans who you’re likely to meet (or not meet) at a hockey game.
Some of these fans clearly have a true passion for the game, others, well, they are just there for something to do.

British Fan Type #3 – The NHL Fanatic

This person looks strangely familiar…

Bio:
This type of fan, unlike the Football/Soccer Fan, has a tendency to live, breath, eat and sleep NHL Hockey rather than the UK’s national sport. They hate nearly every aspect of Football/Soccer/”The Beautiful Game”/Whatever the hell it’s called, and would much rather follow a more likeable alternative, which in this case would be Hockey. They will have good reasons for hating Football, such as attempted peer pressure, social pressure, or the fact that they have to put up with the sport being shoved down their throats by everyone in general, including the media.

Their interest in Hockey may root from a certain movie, cartoon, or even a stupidly inaccurate videogame like NHL Hitz. Ironically, they will usually end up disliking said film, cartoon or videogame once they have started following their supported NHL team full time, mainly because of inaccuracies.

Once they’ve picked their team, they will follow them through any means possible, with their most basic method being to regularly visit their team’s website, and they will also sign up to related forums and join in with discussions with the local fans. If they are lucky enough to be able to see their team on TV, they will jump at the chance. Otherwise, they’ll happily settle for an online radio feed… either way, if this type of fan happens to be supporting a team that’s many time zones away, for example one of the West Coast franchises, then their body clock will become quite messed up.

Sometime after they’ve become an NHL fan, they will learn that there is a local team somewhere nearby that plays on weekends. They will either regularly or occasionally attend games. Usually they will enjoy the game, but sometimes they will needlessly nitpick at everything, going as far as to compare the “poor standards” of British Hockey to the NHL, in order to make the latter sound better (because, of course, they like it better), sometimes even arguing with the local team’s Forum Users over the matter.

As a way of showing that they are a diehard fan of their chosen NHL team, this type of fan will blow their money on all sorts of merchandise like jerseys, pucks, pennants, t-shirts and hats, usually importing it directly from the US, enabling them to take advantage of the exchange rate. They will decorate their bedroom with the merchandise and wear their jerseys (or other items of clothing) with pride, and get quite agitated when visitors don’t recognise the team.

Characteristics:
Notably male, aged at least 14 and up. They will be easier to spot if they are wearing team-related clothing.

Favourite Team:
Their chosen team will have a certain aspect of their identity that will appeal to them, such as the name, logo and colour combination. The team’s location may or may not be important in their decision. If they are lucky, they will also have a small local team to root for, but they won’t care about them anywhere near as much as their chosen NHL team.

Other:
Since this type of fan has so much passion for the game, they may end up producing a website dedicated to Hockey. There’s at least one of these that we’ve seen on the web somewhere… PowerPlayNet? Something like that anyway…
