Definitive Fan #18 – Going too far (UK Fan Special)

When people seem to stereotype us British, they think Tea, Cricket and Crumpets at 4pm. If these were the only types of fans you found at UK hockey games, it would be a much different atmosphere. However reality is that you will actually meet a vast cross section of fans, varying from those there because their “soccer game” has finished and they want to see more blood, to the truly passionate fans who make the most of what little attention their favorite sport gets in the country.
Originating as a 3 part special, the Definitive Fan: UK edition has grown now and is happily part of the Definitive Fan series.

As with any Definitive fan, some of these clearly have a true passion for the game, others, well, they are just there for something to do.

Definitive Fan #18 – Going too far (UK Fan Special)

Bio:
Game day. The last game of the season, and it is against the host teams biggest rivals. The history between these teams is colorful to say the least and a big crowd is expected. Some of the fans who come, want to see an exciting game of hockey; most hope for an exciting game. One person however has just one thing on their mind: “Lets make as much noise as possible versus watching the game”.
Now let me be clear. I’m not against fans making noise, cheering for their teams or coming up with witty chants; however there comes a point where it gets silly.
So here we are at this game, and behind all we have is some rather crusty looking 60 year old woman wearing what looks like something you would sleep in poised, rattle in hand and a voice that could deafen a thousand poor souls.
Every 2 seconds, bang on queue she would shout exactly the same phrase – “Come on Cheeeeftuuuns”. This would then proceed to be repeated at least 5 times every minute proving distracting for anyone who actually wanted to focus on the game, especially during critical moments and to be 100%, most likely a huge distraction for the players.
However, the vocal chords were not this old bats only weapon oh no. This one had an old fashioned football rattle. For those of you who are not familiar, this noisemaker was banned from many pro leagues some time ago for being loud, annoying and very offputting for the players. Keeping in mind its primary design was used for an outdoor environment where sound can travel well, and it was used during World War 2 to alert people of potential gas attacks, you can get an idea of how loud it is. Place it inside a metal building which already offers abysmal acoustics, this makes for one heck of a noise. So for well over 60 minutes, we were not only subjected to the shrieks from this woman, but additionally to an almost continuous drone of her “soccer rattle”.
Had this woman calmed it a little, it would have been tolerable, but for the continuous incessant noise coming from her, I am awarding her with the first annual PowerPlayGoal.com – Worst UK Fan of the year award 2010/11 season. Congratulations.

Characteristics:
Single, on their own and reaching their 60s. These were the characteristics of this noisy and unbearable fan and in my experience of UK hockey over the years it is usually the same. Do single spinster women reach 60 and think “lets go make unbearable noise at hockey games?”. Perhaps so?

Favorite Team:
They usually will go for the most local option and will never travel. Sometimes they become almost die hard fans; however in the case of the aforementioned fan, I have never seen her at a game before and hope not to in the future.

Other:
Noise is great. It add to the atmosphere. Catchy chants, a bit of cheering are great. However constantly screeching for over an hour, annoying evidently several fans and screeching just one thing over and over (which bizarrely would occasionally get cut off half way for no reason like someone was pushing a pause / stop button) does not make you a pleasant fan to be around.

Congratulations to this fan for being the first recipient of our new annual award for PowerPlayGoal.com – Worst UK Fan of the year award 2010/11 season.

I’m KevKev, and I hope to never meet that fan again. This is PowerPlayGoal.com

Definitive Fan #17 – The 3 Year Old

This is The Definitive Fan – The online guide from PowerPlayGoal.com to the types of fans who you’re likely to meet (or not meet) at a game.
Some of these fans really grind our gears, some of them we love to see. Make your own mind up as we discuss:

Fan Type #17 – The 3 Year Old

Bio:
Sure, they would be better off at home watching Nick jr or Bear in the big blue house, but either because they saw it on TV and went “ooh I’d like to see that..” or have been taken through no choice of your own, the 3 year old hockey fan is one of the funniest fans you could meet at a game.

Characteristics:
Likely to be sitting with their parents, your attention may be first brought to them upon hearing their line of questions (lets face it when you are 3, you question everything).
These questions can include from recent experience:
“Where have the players all gone?” – At the end of a period
“What is that car doing on the ice” – Upon seeing the Zamboni
“Who is the guy with the whistle” – Early insults towards the ref maybe?
Beyond this, they can often be seen carrying or struggling to carry a vast amount of merchandise, often from assorted NHL teams.
Rather than pick on and stick with it, your typical 3year old will be attracted to anything firstly with an animal on it (eg. San Jose Sharks), and also will go for anything that looks extra shiney (ie. LA Kings logo).
For example, a recent visit to a rink showed a 3 year old nearby with both a Penguins pennant and an LA Kings sticker. I guess you could support both teams, but you would ahve to ask why; especially when one team is so much better than the other.
You are also likely to at least once or twice likely to almost trip over them if you leave your seat during a game, as they will often get bored after 5 or so minutes and attempt to crawl around on the floor surrounding them until their parents tell them to stop doing it.
Occasionally you may also see them wering a custom jersey with their “nickname” or frst name printed on the back. This defies the usual idea of having either a players surname or your surname printed on your back.

Favourite Team:
Usually based on the following two factors: What animal they are obsessed with, colour they love or what their parents make them support.
Popular choices include Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, Florida Panthers (who am I kidding, even 3 year olds know not to support them), Detroit Red Wings.
Regardless of what they say they support, the future is the key and they will decide on a more suitable team choice as they grow older. Hopefully.

Other:
Unlike many of the other Definitive Fans, this type isn’t as annoying and it is always nice to see people being introduced to the game and perhaps also hopefully pursuing a long time interest into the game as they grow older. So long as it draws them away from “soccer”, all is good.

The Definitive Fan #16 – Celebrity Culture

Welcome to a special edition Definitive Fan!. Rather than the usual guide to a particular type of fan; this edition will look at actual fans of the game.

In this definitive fan we are taking a look at The Stars. No not the team – but the stars of the silver screen; the music world or from various other places.
As with the celebrity culture, it is very common for a celebrity to go where they will be seen and receive some publicity – often the ones who say they hate being followed around with everyone gawking at them are the ones who like to be followed; and many of the celebrities who occasionally make an appearance at hockey game; or wear a teams jersey clearly aren’t there to support the team. One of the best examples of this type of celebrity would be Snoop Dogg. During the Ducks successful run to the Stanley Cup a few years back; he was featured in a picture on the NHL page at a Ducks game complete with jersey and novelty foam finger. However, do some googling and you will also find him as a Sens fan (both before and after the Ducks game [ironic considering that they beat the sens…]) and in one video – in a Penguins jersey. Whether he is a fan of a team or not; I think it is safe to say he is more of a publicity ‘hound’.

Actual Fans

Kevin Smith

Director /Actor
Born: Red Bank, New Jersey- USA
Allegiance: New Jersey Devils
Famous for: Films such as Clerks, Dogma, Zack and Miri make a Porno
Bio: Smith, is evidently a New Jersey fan. Born in New Jersey, his first film featured banners and jerseys featuring The Devils; and simply loads of references to hockey itself. His general take on most movies somehow allows him to sneak in at least one or two references to the game; and where possible something featuring his allegiance to the New Jersey Devils.
Even in a comedy such as Zack and Miri make a porno, he managed to squeeze in a Winter Classic jersey, and a scene shot outside the Mellon.
To seal the deal of him beng a fan further, Kevin Smith is known for his occasional blog posts on the NHL website; and occasional appearance during games in the end of period programs.
Beyond this; Kevin Smith has also started production on a film based on the hockey song “hit somebody”. This will be a drama/comedy and is set to hit cinemas in 2012.
Hockey Mugshot:

Mike Myers

Actor
Born: Scarborough, Ontario – Canada
Allegiance: Toronto Maple Leafs
Famous for: Films such as Wayne’s World, Austin Powers and Shrek
Bio: Obviously being born into Canada would certainly have impacted his choice in both what sport to follow and what team to support – and Mike Myers is reported on making occasional appearances at Leafs games (perhaps like everyone else; he also finds it hard to get tickets for games). He is regarded by many fans to be possibly the largest Leafs fan there is; and that is no small achievement.
His (by most) worst film ‘The Love Guru” featured cup finals between the LA Kings and The Toronto Maple Leafs. Conveniently, this was an excuse for him to feature The Leafs winning the cup; something I guess like most fans, he was tired of waiting for.
Hockey Mugshot:

Pantera

Heavy Metal Band

Origin:
Arlington, Texas – USA
Allegiance:
Dallas Stars
Famous for:
Cowboys from Hell, The Great Southern Trendkill
Bio:
Regarded as the Metallica of the south, and by many as one of most influential metal bands in the USA at one stage, Pantera were a metal band that turned heads.
Sadly; they disbanded in the early 2000’s and they all went onto separate projects. Most notably “Dimebag Darell” was tragically murdered by an obsessive fan a few years later.
However in their prime, they were highly regarded as Dallas Stars fans – and this evidence still reminds long after they are gone; as the Stars are perhaps the only team with their own metal soundtrack. The obviously title “Dallas Stars Fight Song” track was written and performed by Pantera and remains a Stars fan favourite years on; usually playing after each intermission.
Hockey Mugshot:

Kid Rock

Rock musician
Born: Romeo, Michicgan – USA
Allegiance: Detroit Red Wings
Famous for: “I am the bullgod”, “Wasting Time”
Bio: Detroit rocker “Kid Rock”; is known for his music and his respect for Detroit sports. He is reported to make regular appearances at Wings games, Pistons games and Lions games; when he has the time. He has even recorded a goal song for Detroit, which makes an occasional appearance at games entitled “Hey! Hey! Hockeytown”.
Hockey Mugshot:

Elisha Cuthbert

Actress

Born: Calgary, Alberta – Canada
Allegiance: LA Kings
Famous for: Old School, The Girl Next Door, Love Actually
Bio: A lot of celebrities seen at Kings games aren’t often Kings fans; they are just there looking for some personal promotion. However Cuthbert is actually a loyal and avid Kings fan. She owns a season ticket, is regularly seen at games and in the 2005 season she even had an NHL blog. She was even at one point romantically involved with the then LA Kings player Sean Avery; however now dates Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf. A little trivia here for you; Sean Avery was kicked from the stars following the suspension caused by Avery’s comments on Cuthbert’s new relationship.

Keanu Reeves

Actor
Born: Beirut, Lebanon
Allegiance: Toronto Maple Leafs
Famous for: The Matrix, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Speed
Bio: A lesser known fact; In high school, Keanu Reeves was a keen hockey fan and player. He played for his school as a Goalie; and had the nickname “The Wall”. However, he was less interested in school; eventually dropping out and becoming an actor. Could anyone imagine if he had made it all the way to the NHL? He has however adorned the skates a few times more recently, once for a charity hockey event.
Despite living in Los Angeles now, he is reportedly a Leafs fan at heart and apparently makes appearances at games where possible.
Hockey Mugshot:

Michael Bublé

Musician
Born: Burnaby, British Columbia – Canada
Allegiance: Vancouver Canucks
Famous for:
A wide range of Adult Contemporary music tracks
Bio: As a child he aspired to be a player for the Cannucks, and believes that if he was any good at hockey he wouldn’t be a singer right now. One of his requirements for his dressing room before a concert is that there is a local teams hockey puck in the room; and he is now the co-owner of Junior hockey team, The Vancouver Giants.
Hockey Mugshot:

So there we are; a few celebrities who are actually hockey fans; and not just in it for the publicity.
So I guess the key is; you never know who to expect at a hockey game
