We’ve been a bit quiet during these Stanley Cup Playoffs, but an infographic published by the Los Angeles Kings on their website has been drawing a lot of attention, and deserved a special mention.
So where did this come from? Basically, a reporter for Fox News embarrassed herself while talking about a game between the Kings and Coyotes. She clearly didn’t do the research, getting player names wrong, calling the puck the “ball”, and… look, just watch the video.
The icing on the cake is right at the end of the video, where the old black and orange NHL logo, which hasn’t been in use since 2005, was used instead of the current one.
Speaking of getting logos wrong, NBC managed to get the LA Kings confused with another team with the same name:
Of course it’s apparent that any team not named the Lakers plays second fiddle to the Lakers in Southern California, especially the hockey franchises it seems, which is unfortunate. But this goof up by the graphics team at NBC comes across as ignorant, and enraged Kings fans, not to mention the Kings organisation itself. Naturally they wanted to protect their brand and clear up the apparent confusion, hence the infographic posted above. NBC have since apologised for their mistake.
Was it a risky move by the Kings? Maybe. But from this Ducks fan who normally hates everything Los Angeles Kings, I say good on them for getting that infographic out there, you have earned my respect for fighting back against the generic ignorance.
