Happy Belated Birthday NHL!

Yesterday was the 91st Anniversary of the NHL, the date way back in 1917 when the NHL was first formed, with the league’s first teams being the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas and Quebec Bulldogs (who did not take part in the inaugural season due to financial difficulties, suspending operations for two years), with one of the main purposes of the NHL’s founding being to force out the owner of the Toronto franchise, Eddie Livingstone, as he was known for giving his team unfair advantages. The other four owners basically got fed up with him and formed a new league without him: this marked the end of the NHA, and the birth of the NHL.

Since then, the NHL has grown much larger, from 5 teams in its early years to 30 teams today, and is recognised worldwide as the world’s premier Ice Hockey league.

Also strangely enough, the NHL is also currently undergoing its 90thseason rather than its 91st, and I’m pretty sure most of you reading this will know the reasoning behind that, and at the same time preferring not to talk about it… *coughcoughlockout*

I can’t think of anything else to say, so here’s a crappy picture of a birthday cake that I hastily cobbled together on Photoshop.
