Welcome to the new.

Posted by kevkev On May - 25 - 2008

Hey. Maybe some of you remember this site for what it was known best for – The hockey site with slightly offbeat articles, a large selection of wallpapers and a never ending trip behind team logos.

Or, perhaps, you remember the bugs, the pages that would take 2, 3 hours to load and of course the digg system that seriously didn’t work.

Well, however you remembered us, you need to forget it all. Since the beginning of March, we have been working behind the scenes on this new site and we finally able to show you what we have achieved so far.

The new site adopts a web 2.0 style, and is more blog based than the previous site. We will still feature a selection of wallpapers (they are coming, don’t worry) but we will also be home to a whole range of content, from features which find fault with everything, to a showbiz feature about a film coming out soon, which feature hockey. We have blogs, vlogs, a planned column written by someone who has NO clue about what hockey is, and talks absolute rubbish; and tonnes more – infact I’m certain we could easily fill the American Airlines Center with content, and still not fit it in.

PowerPlayGoal.com is back people, update your RSS feeds, bookmarks, digg thingymabobs etc. You don’t want to miss a thing.

And, if you seriously love our site, register today and you will get exclusive insider features coming real soon.

Just go easy on our site at the moment, as we are still squashing all the bugs and adding new features. Hopefully, we will have completed the beta run of the website in time for the first puck drop of the next season.

Welcome back.

The Hockey Guru

The love Guru poster

Maybe some teams need a Guru to do better next year (coughoilerscough) but at least there is one for NHL players who have problems with their wives it seems, and who knows if this would actually make a player better…. But that’s just the case with a new film coming out, you may of heard about it and just twigged what I’m talking about. I should’ve said stick, not twigged. That’s right! There is a new Hockey related film out! And it’s a comedy, unfortunately not SlapShot3 but hey it’s got Hockey and Mike Myers! For those of you who do not know this actor, Mike Myers, he is best known for playing the hyped up swinger from the 70’s who is also a special agent and is very well known for his classic OTT British poor dentistry and his main catch phrase of “Yeah baby, yeah!” Also you will more like know him, his voice at least, from the Shrek films as he plays the voice of… Well Shrek.

But moving onto this new film, it already is looking fantastic with the British humour and being Nike Myers he has some jokes similar to the one’s in the majority of his films with a few slit twists to make them fresh. But, HOCKEY! FILM! YAY! I’m guessing you would like to know what’s it is about, well it’s about the Guru called Pitka played by Mike Myers himself. The story is he is an American but is raised outside of the country in India, to become a love Guru who moves back to the States to become a self-help guide, and no thankfully not another 12-step guide, and while in America he gets offered 20,000 Benjamin’s (that’s two millions bucks, a Benjamin is 100 dollar bill) which is a pain in the ass to get rid of) to help the love life of…

Here comes the Hockey tie in…

The love Guru has to help get Darren Roanoke, played by Romany Malco, from the Toronto Maple Leaf’s back with his wife who starts to date L.A King’s Jacques Grande, plays by Justin Timberlake. Because of this conflict between Romany and Jacques with his with in between it affects both of their, or one of, performance in the team. This of course worries the coaches on both teams, one coach is Jane Bullard who is played by Jessica Alba, I’m sure many people will just see this film hoping for another nude shower scene. The other coach is Cherkov which is played by Verne Troyer who is know like Mike Myers for being in the Austin Power’s films playing Dr. Evil’s sidekick/clone called Mini-me.

Cherkov? That’s sound like jer… I better not say what it sounds like.

But anyway the main idea of the film is, love guru helps get Maple Leaf’s star Darren Roanoke back with his wife so that typically the Leafs can win another Stanley Cup! I bet you saw that one coming, but you can see this quite literally:

War On Logos #1: Goin’ Fishing

War On Logos logo

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

Spongebob Squarepants… and this delightful logo:

New York Islanders logo

Much to the dismay of fans of the New York Islanders (with very few exceptions), this fisherman was introduced in 1995 as the team’s new logo. Unlike other teams at the time who only introduced nasty third jerseys, the Islanders instead chose to completely rebrand themselves, getting rid of the old logo and replacing it with this guy. They also ditched the fan favourite colour of royal blue and replaced it with navy, even adding teal to the mix.

Where to begin… first of all, this logo does not in any way say ‘Islanders’, even though there is a great big wordmark with the team’s name on it right there. More noticeably, what’s with the fisherman? I’ve never seen one wearing a bright teal coloured hat and coat before. He also seems to be a fan of girls’ makeup… I mean, look at his skin: he’s applied so much fake tan that it’s turned bright orange, making his grey beard really stand out! And what exactly is he guarding the net for? I think he’s either hiding his good friend Spongebob Squarepants in there, or his secret stash of makeup. The only likeable thing about this logo is the waves at the bottom: too bad they don’t really go too well with a hockey team’s logo, and would seem more fitting for a swimming pool or something.

Along with this logo came a set of new jerseys, which had horrible wavy patterns on it: the whole rebranding was so bad that fans all over the NHL mocked it… even the Islanders’ own fans! And so midway through the 1996-97 season, the logo was removed in favour of a (slightly) updated version of the Islanders old logo, and then returned to old style jerseys the following year.

So what happened to it afterwards? Some say that it resides in that pineapple under the sea with Spongebob. I think however that it was dropped into the deepest ocean on the planet, hopefully leaving no evidence.

Whoever designed this horrible thing needs to be shot at with plenty of pucks… or at the very least, slapped around the face several times with a wet fish.
